The Saturnia hot springs are one of Tuscany’s most photographed natural wonders: a series of milky-blue terraced pools where warm, mineral-rich water spills over chalk-white travertine rock in the heart of the Maremma. What surprises most first-time visitors is that the famous part — the Cascate del Mulino — is completely free to enter and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Cascate del Mulino vs. Terme di Saturnia — Two Different Places

This is the single most useful thing to understand before you go. “Saturnia” actually refers to two separate experiences that sit a short distance apart.

The Cascate del Mulino (“waterfalls of the mill”) are the free, open-air cascades you see all over Instagram — a natural staircase of limestone pools fed directly by the thermal spring. There is no admission charge; only the parking is paid.

The Terme di Saturnia is a separate, paid luxury spa and golf resort across the way, with manicured sulphur pools, treatment rooms, and a hotel. Non-guests can buy a day pass (roughly €27 at the time of writing). It is calm, polished, and never crowded — the opposite of the free cascades on a busy weekend. Both draw on the same legendary spring; they simply package it very differently.

Why the Water Is Warm — and What It Smells Like

The spring rises from deep volcanic sources beneath the earth’s crust and emerges at a constant 37.5°C (around 99°F) — close to body temperature, so you can stay in for hours without feeling cold or overheated. Roughly 800 litres surface every second, which is why the pools never go stagnant.

The water is sulphurous, and yes, it has a distinct smell — a faint rotten-egg note that fades quickly once you’re in. That same sulphur, along with the so-called “thermal plankton,” is what gives the springs their long-standing reputation for being good for the skin, circulation, and respiratory system. The Etruscans bathed here first, and the Romans after them believed the waters were a gift from the gods.

Where Saturnia Is — and How to Get There

The springs sit near the village of Saturnia in the comune of Manciano, Province of Grosseto, in the Albegna valley of southern Tuscany, right on the border with Lazio. It’s beautiful, rural, and genuinely remote — which is the catch.

There is no practical public transport to the Cascate del Mulino. Realistically you have two options:

• Drive yourself. From Florence, the trip takes roughly 2.5 hours through the Tuscan countryside; from Rome, it’s about 2 hours 20 minutes; from the cruise port of Civitavecchia, under an hour and a half. Search “Cascate del Mulino” in your maps app rather than just “Saturnia,” or you’ll end up in the village.
• Take a guided day trip. If you’re based in Florence or Rome without a car — or simply don’t want to handle the long mountain drive both ways — a guided day trip is the easy alternative. Best Time to Visit

For the calmest experience, go early at sunrise or in the evening. The cascades are popular and get genuinely crowded at midday on weekends and holidays, when the small pools fill with people. Weekdays and off-season are noticeably quieter. The springs are wonderful in every season — soaking in warm water while cold air settles over the Maremma in winter is half the appeal — but summer afternoons are the busiest.

What to Bring

A little preparation goes a long way at a site with almost no facilities:

• Swimwear worn under your clothes — there are no real changing rooms at the free cascades.
• A towel, and ideally a robe for the walk back to the car.
• Water shoes or grippy sandals — the travertine and pool bottoms are slippery and can be sharp.
• No jewellery. Sulphur tarnishes silver and gold quickly, so leave it behind.
• Expect the sulphur smell to linger on swimwear afterwards, so don’t bring your favourite suit.
• Bring only essentials; it’s hard to watch belongings while you’re in the water.
